What is Accoya?

Accoya is produced from fast-growing, sustainably managed Pinus radiata trees, which can be harvested after about 30 years of growth. A modification process known as acetylation penetrates into the core of the wood to create a product that is highly stable, resistant to rot, ecologically responsible and uniquely durable. The treatment gives this softwood variety all the desirable characteristics of a hardwood with none of the disadvantages. No toxic substances are required for the modification process, and the natural beauty of the wood is retained. All this combines to make Accoya the leading modified wood available anywhere today.

Accoya: an unparalleled combination of sustainability and stability

Once modified, Accoya boasts a Class 1 durability rating and is 100% rot resistant. This means the wood is not susceptible to damage from insects or fungi. Accoya is exceptionally durable and resistant to extreme weather conditions and UV radiation. It exhibits virtually no shrinkage or swelling and offers 3 to 4 times greater dimensional stability than traditional woods. Accoya remains structurally solid, with minimal movement before, during and many decades after construction. Thanks to this superior dimensional stability, projects continue to look stunning for years and years with minimal maintenance. Its high usability – with boards that are delivered straight and stay that way – also makes it a favourite among designers and builders. This, combined with its enhanced durability, results in an unrivalled wood product that is ideal for timber decking, exterior cladding, bridges and playground equipment.

Sustainability and guarantee

Because it is produced sustainably, Accoya has a small CO2 footprint and therefore contributes to a circular, biobased economy. And because there are no toxic components present in the wood, it is also fully reusable and recyclable. In other words, Accoya is an entirely sustainable product. Even better, it requires little to no maintenance.

Accoya wood finishes

While Accoya is beautiful in its natural state, it is also suitable for a wide range of finishes. Opaque or transparent oils, charring and brushing are three of the finishes that we can apply to Accoya.

But you can also leave our Accoya decking boards and Accoya cladding unfinished and allow them to develop a gorgeous, naturally weathered appearance. Don’t forget that Accoya wood can, very occasionally, become slightly marked during storage. These marks disappear naturally during the weathering process, but special attention should be paid to this for indoor use.

Another possibility would be to opt for a profile in Accoya Color Grey. This coloured variation is stained from the surface to the core with grey pigment, making it a high-performance material for decking and cladding. What’s more, the grey colour stays attractive for years and the wood does not need regular oiling.
